The Federation Starship Reference is currently in development as a comprehensive database of Star Trek starships
and starship classes, specifically those of the Federation (Starfleet as well as other operators) and pre-Federation Earth. Information is drawn
from the 'classic' television series and movies - meaning TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT and the pre-2009 movies; as well as selected print sources and
backstage information. Additionally, newer series such as Picard and Lower Decks are acknowledged, though (at least for now) not
Discovery and its direct spin-offs (including Strange New Worlds).
The site was borne out of a personal need for a starship resource more conveniently organized than existing online sources. Starting from a simple
Excel workbook for strictly personal use, a web interface was eventually built, the data ported over to a proper SQL database, and more and more features bolted on as need arose.
At some point the whole thing had become potentially useful for a wider audience, and the decision was made to take it public.
Do note that editorial content will remain 100% with the site's maintainer - this is not a wiki or some other form of collaborative effort.
There will however be ways to suggest changes and additions, and to provide other feedback.
There is no definitive launch date planned yet , with the current estimate no more precise than "before the end of 2021". At this point there is
still a lot of copy editing and content review to be done, and some secondary website features are still in development. Feel free to follow the Twitter account for occasional progress updates.
I'm a bored software developer from the Netherlands, Trek fan for about 25 years now, who has always had a particular interest in the starships, technology and the history of the fictional universe. My engagement with the wider fandom has mostly been that of a quiet online lurker, although I used to participate on the venerable Flare Sci-Fi Forums, and have sporadically been posting on TrekBBS's tech forum recently. Trek as a hobby had gotten a bit on the backburner after Enterprise ended and the Abrams reboot disappointed me. Nevertheless I never stopped (re)watching my old favorites, and finally the influx of new Trek (Picard and Lower Decks in particular) enthused me about the franchise once more.
Here are a few screenshots (click to enlarge). As the site and its content are still in active development, these previews may obviously turn out not to be entirely representative.
